As children mature as writers, it's important to give them the opportunity to write using a variety of formats. Persuasive writing helps students formulate specific reasons for their opinions, and provides an opportunity to research facts related to their opinions. As students develop an understanding of how writing can influence or change another's thoughts or actions, they can begin to understand the persuasive nature of the marketing they are exposed to through television, the internet, and other media too.
During this term, we will be choosing a topic for a persuasive essay or presentation to be completed by the end of the term. We will learn about how to structure an essay or presentation, how to research to support an argument and thinking critically about information. And we’ll do it in an enjoyable way, with lots of active, engaging and hands-on activities that help students learn the various concepts involved.
Students whose ability to read and think is not a problem but who struggle with physical hand-writing will be able to have parent help with writing if needed, or learn the concepts and use brief notes and images to help them. We will not be spending every class writing. There is a large amount of discussion and practical, hands-on activities involved too. While we will be writing during this class, the focus is on introducing students to the structure and concepts of a piece of persuasive writing and the actual physical writing involved will be adapted for each student’s level. Students who write fluently will be sufficiently challenged too.
